I would say we download/steal unavailable content to participate in the fandom and the culture around it more so than wanting to work for it. We want to watch the things other people in our social groups are watching so that we can discuss them and share our excitement. The point of it is not in the effort, but in the belonging.
Full discloser: I have not seen Series 2 of Sherlock because I refuse to do so illegally, but I have gone “I believe in Sherlock”ing.
